The 2008 Cottingham LTC Christmas party proved to be a big hit again. A wonderfully decorated club house was host to over 40 people who were treated to a fantastic meal, disco dancing and great live music provided by singer/songwriter Ben Arkut who proved he uses a guitar to the same high level as he uses a tennis racket. The evening’s presentation ceremony for each team’s Player of the Year proved popular. Richard Potter earned the Yorkshire League prize, Richard Nelson was recognized for his contribution to the Men’s B team, Briege Fowler for the Ladies’ D team and Andrew Sanderson for the Men’s E team. Adam Maw was the Men’s D Player of the Year and was also presented with the Junior of the Year trophy by Gilly Gasser. The Cottingham Clubhouse was given the spooky treatment for the kids’ Halloween Party. Smoke machines and toilet roll mummies were the order of the day and all the junior’s costumes proved scarily fantastic. Head Coach Paul Holtby came as Ted “The Count” Hankey, Richard Potter as Ray Reardon, Ben Holtby as Dimitar Berbatov with a machine gun and Ivan Close looked too realistic as Freddie Kruger. Big thanks to Sarah and Nick King and Adele Lake for the décor, Gillian Haldenby for the food and Rowan King for the outdoor “graveyard”. |
Bonfire Night Party |
Everything went with a bang despite the damp and drizzle at Cottingham’s Bonfire Night Party. Over 40 people enjoyed the bonfire, fireworks and food. Thanks to J&G’s for the refreshments and to Richard Nelson and John Stones for the bonfire. |
Chairman’s Cup 2008 |

The unpredictable British climate produced one of the nicest days of the year to make this an event to remember. Despite being held a week later in September than normal the 56 competitors enjoyed a day of blue skies and warm sunshine. Seven teams of eight players battled it out over five hours for the right to lift the trophy. Each team was seeded into four pairs with Paul Cartwright & Alison Olner just coming out as the top pair in the 1st seeds, Ken Thomas & Barbara McCall in the 2nds, Ben Withers & Diana North in the 3rds and Tony & June Holdsworth in the 4ths. When the overall scores were added together the team comprising Ian McCall, Diana Ormiston, Paul Cartwright, Alison Olner, Tony & June Holdsworth, Ben Holtby & 10 year-old Lucy Dai sponsored by Garthwest Creative came out on top. The runners up spot was shared between the Reckitt Benckiser team and the Sangwin team. Proud team captain Ian McCall received the Chairman’s Cup for the second year running from club chairman James West. |

Tennis Taster Proves a Hit on Cottingham Day |
|||||||||
This year’s Cottingham Day was far from blessed with sunshine, in fact the heavy downpour of rain persisted throughout most of the day! However the tennis still proved a hit with the locals who did take the risk and turned out. With a constant stream of youngsters waiting to have a hit with PHTC Coach Ben Holtby, the tennis bug was spreading around Cottingham! As well as many welcome new faces, regular tennis juniors Johannus Monday and Sarah Findley came along to show others how it’s done. The continued success of our participation in Cottingham Day is of great benefit to us all and we hope to see you all again next year! Thank you. |
